They are sharpening their number two pencils and receiving instructions to “fill in the bubble completely.”

Yes, thousands of students throughout Southwest Riverside have settled into test-taking season.

While these state-generated tests are aimed mostly at gauging a student’s progress, the prospect of a day spent crunching numbers and employing some serious brain power can be daunting.

The Riverside County Office of Education offers these tips for parents to ensure their students’ best test success:

• Make sure your children have eaten well on test days. Studies suggest that good nutrition is related to improved attention and concentration.

• Help your children by encouraging a good night’s rest before exams. Children who are tired will have difficulty focusing on their work.

• Make the morning of test days pleasant. Stress will impair your children’s ability to perform their best.

• Remind your children to dress comfortably, perhaps in layers, so that they are able to adjust to the temperature in the room.

• Ensure that your children make it to school on-time so that they do not miss any instructions and are allowed ample time to settle in and relax before the test begins.

• Don’t schedule dental or doctor appointments for testing days.

• Don’t be too anxious about your children’s test scores. Although it is important to let them know that the tests should be taken seriously, it is also important not to increase test-taking anxiety.

• Don’t underestimate your influence on your children. Taking an interest in what they are doing at school and helping them prepare for tests will certainly have a positive impact on them.

Menifee — Inspired by a television program that featured footage of a homeless woman using toilet water to shave her legs, Kimberly Glover decided she would collect toiletries for a local nonprofit that works with the area’s homeless as her community service project.

The 16-year-old from Menifee, a junior at Santa Rosa Academy, emailed more than 100 companies, large and small, and explained what she was doing. And then she waited…

On Wednesday, November 7, the JV-A Flag Football team took on the Van Avery Eagles for the IVIAA Junior Varsity Flag Football Championship. It was a hard fought battle that ended with the Rangers coming out on top, earning the second consecutive IVIAA Flag Football Championship. Van Avery has had much success in the past, winning championships every school year for the past seven years.

Van Avery had lost two games coming in to the Championship, their first loss being at the hands of SRA. The Rangers were undefeated and looking to cap off the first perfect season in SRA history. The Rangers got on the scoreboard first, but failed to convert the extra point. Van Avery quickly answered with a score, in addition to a 2-point conversion. The back and forth first half came to an end with Santa Rosa scoring a late touchdown to take a 13-8 lead at halftime.

During the first drive of the second half, the Rangers were stuffed at the 1 yard line. In the ensuing drive, the Eagles scored a touchdown, but failed to convert the extra point making the score 14-13 Eagles. For the rest of the half, the defenses took over with Mario Badillo pulling flags in the secondary all over the field.

With one minute left in the game, SRA denied Van Avery five yards three times in a row due to a costly Ranger penalty. This gave the Rangers the ball back for a last minute drive, led by quarterback Dylan Morace. Morace and a no-huddle offense was capped by a touchdown from Kayden Troge-Jarvis to make the score 19-13 with 27 seconds remaining. The Eagles quickly marched down the field for a first down, but through a game-ending interception to Ranger defender, Marcello Petteway.

Congratulations to the players on the team Mario Badillo, Kaden Long, Drew Dalton, Ben Lashley, Andrew Snyder, Dylan Morace, Sean Drabek, Connor Dougherty, Marcello Petteway, Kaden Troge-Jarvis and Ryan Ramos.
